Self Defense Training Tip: Finish the Fight

One of the worst martial arts training habits is stopping when you’re winning. Let’s say you score with a big reverse punch… now what? Do you turn around, walk off, and fix your belt?

Hey, Hot Shot! The fight isn’t over!

As a matter of fact, it just got started. That’s why, whether you’re practicing martial arts for sport or self-defense, you should never let your guard down! Even when you’re winning!

Imagine taking down a bad guy in a real fight. Imagine you break his arm. Now what?

Best case scenario—the bad guy gives up and apologizes. But it’s also possible that he bites your leg. Or pulls a knife and stabs you. Or maybe his girlfriend stomps you with a high heel.

The point is there are a million ways that your movie fantasy can turn into a nightmare. That’s why you should always train finish the fight and escape.

Consider Renzo Gracie. He’d rather let you break his arm than tap out. That proves that arm bars and all those cool moves you practice may not be enough in a self-defense situation. If the guy who teaches arm bars tells you that arm bars won’t stop him, you better learn a few more moves.

And the most important is keeping your guard up. Always.

It’s sad , but true… a fight isn’t over when you say it’s over, it’s over when the bad guy says it’s over. So, train to manage the end of a fight as carefully as you manage the beginning and middle.

When you land a punch or get a tap, don’t make the mistake of thinking the fight is over. Stay on guard!

Otherwise, the next fight you win, might be the last fight you lose.
